People seek out coaches when they desire to improve from their base line (what ever that base line or "normal" is for you) and become something more. People also seek out coaches when they feel like they are "stuck" in life situations that they are unhappy with, however, they feel like they can't or don't know how to make a change. Coaching helps individuals uncover or clarify their desires, figure out what has been holding them back from achieving these desires and then develop a systematic way of thinking and doing to overcome the problem. My job is to give you the right questions and the right pushes that allow you to be creative on your solution. It is essentially to help you think differently from how you have in the past, to allow for a different outcome in the future.
What is the difference between therapy and coaching? We can think of a person's psychology on a continuum. At one end would be people who are currently struggling with issues related to their mental health such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or a developmental challenge. At the other end of the continuum would be individuals who have the highest level of self-actualization or fulfillment. Individuals at the first end of the continuum are generally focusing on issues from the past in order to get better in the present. This is best accomplished through the aid of psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other professionals individuals who have access to specialized knowledge that can help them overcome or cope with those pains.
Coaching, on the other hand, deals with people that are not struggling with mental health issues per se, but instead might be dealing with feelings of discontentment in some aspect of their life, or perhaps they feel that they would benefit from a new challenge or direction. Essentially, they feel like they want more out of life and to become closer to someone who is truly fulfilled or self-actualized. Coaching helps these individuals focus on things they can do in the present, that can create a different future. The Process
We need to understand what drives you from an internal perspective? It is generally accepted that external motivation works in the short-term, but tends to fail as a long-term solution to motivation and change. Coaching leverages the short-term advantages of increased motivation to create an internal drive for long-term change. My job as a coach is to help you find a way to make the change meaningful for you developed from your own knowledge and wisdom. You can make a change if it is meaningful to you.
