Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
The most effective and common therapy for BPD is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). DBT was first developed by Marsha Linehan who utilized a cognitive behavioural treatment to treat suicidal behaviours in personality disorders. Today, DBT is widely used for all kinds of concerns, but has been the leading therapy for BPD.
DBT focuses on 4 sets of skills:
Mindfulness: The process of being fully aware and present in the current moment
Emotion Regulation: How to change emotions you would like to change
Distress Tolerance: Skills to tolerate difficult situations without changing it
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Learn how to ask for what you want and how to say no in an effective manner that preserves relationships and your self-respect
