What Is Complex PTSD?
You may have heard of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), but did you know there’s a more complex form of it? Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) develops after prolonged or repeated trauma, often in situations where escape wasn’t possible. Unlike traditional PTSD, which can result from a single traumatic event, C-PTSD is rooted in ongoing trauma, such as childhood neglect, domestic abuse, or captivity.

Symptoms of Complex PTSD

C-PTSD shares many symptoms with PTSD but also includes additional emotional and relational challenges. Common symptoms include:

  • Emotional Dysregulation: Intense mood swings, chronic sadness, or anger.
  • Flashbacks & Intrusive Thoughts: Reliving past trauma as if it’s happening now.
  • Negative Self-Perception: Deep feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness.
  • Difficulty with Relationships: Fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting others, or patterns of toxic relationships.
  • Hypervigilance & Anxiety: Always feeling on edge or unsafe, even in safe environments.
  • Dissociation: Feeling disconnected from oneself or reality as a way to cope.

What Causes Complex PTSD?

C-PTSD often stems from long-term trauma, particularly in childhood or relationships where a person felt powerless. Common causes include:

  • Childhood emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Human trafficking or captivity
  • Prolonged neglect or abandonment
  • Exposure to war or living in conflict zones

How Is Complex PTSD Different from PTSD?

While PTSD can result from a single traumatic event, C-PTSD involves chronic trauma that alters a person’s self-identity, relationships, and emotional regulation. PTSD may involve specific triggers, whereas C-PTSD creates an ongoing state of distress and difficulty trusting oneself and others.

Healing from Complex PTSD

Recovery from C-PTSD is possible with the right support and treatment. Here are some approaches that help:

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy: Approaches like ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and somatic therapy help process trauma safely.
  • Building Emotional Regulation Skills: Practices like mindfulness, breathwork, and grounding techniques help regain emotional control.
  • Supportive Relationships: Working with a trauma-informed therapist and surrounding yourself with safe, supportive people is essential.
  • Addressing the Nervous System: Practices such as yoga, meditation, and movement therapy help calm the body’s fight-or-flight response.
  • Self-Compassion & Inner Healing: Rebuilding self-worth and learning to nurture yourself is a crucial step toward recovery.
