Support for the Challenges of Being a Teen

Adolescence comes with significant emotional, social, academic, and physical changes. Teens are often balancing school expectations, friendships, family relationships, social media, identity, and questions about who they are becoming.

When these pressures begin to feel overwhelming, your teen may become more withdrawn, irritable, worried, emotional, or disconnected from the people and activities they once enjoyed.

Teen therapy provides a safe and supportive place for your teen to talk openly, understand what they are experiencing, and develop skills for managing life’s challenges.

At True Living Counselling & Coaching, our experienced teen therapists offer warm, relatable, and personalized support based on your teen’s individual needs. We help teens better understand their emotions, strengthen their confidence, and feel more capable of navigating the challenges in front of them.

Your teen does not have to work through everything alone, and neither do you.

Teen THERAPY IN OKOTOKS, AB

What Is Teen Therapy?

Teen therapy is a collaborative process between your teen and their therapist. It is designed to respect your teen’s growing independence while also recognizing the important role parents and caregivers play in their well-being.

During counselling sessions, teens have a confidential and non-judgemental space to explore their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and experiences at a pace that feels comfortable for them. Therapy may focus on something happening right now, a difficult past experience, or worries about the future.

Your teen’s therapist can help them:

  • Understand and express their emotions
  • Recognize patterns in their thoughts and behaviours
  • Build practical coping and communication skills
  • Develop greater confidence and self-awareness
  • Work through stressful or painful experiences
  • Strengthen relationships with family and friends
  • Make decisions that reflect their values and goals

Where appropriate, therapists may also check in with parents or caregivers to share general progress, offer guidance, and discuss ways to support the teen at home. The boundaries of confidentiality and parent involvement will be explained clearly at the beginning of the counselling process.

We offer both short-term, solution-focused counselling and longer-term therapy depending on your teen’s needs, goals, and circumstances.

Teen Therapy is:

Transformative

An opportunity for your teen to develop greater self-understanding and approach life’s challenges with more clarity and resilience.

Supportive

A compassionate, non-judgemental space where your teen can explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

Empowering

Practical support that helps your teen build confidence, independence, and healthier ways of coping.

Signs Your Teen May Benefit from Therapy

Common Reasons Teens Come to Therapy

There is no single “right” reason for a teen to attend counselling. Some teens need support through a specific experience, while others may not be able to explain exactly why they have not been feeling like themselves.

Teen therapy in Okotoks can help your teen feel understood, develop healthier coping strategies, and feel more confident managing everyday life.

Teen Therapy Approaches

Approaches We May Use In Teen Therapy

Our therapists draw from a variety of evidence-informed and age-appropriate counselling approaches. The methods used will depend on your teen’s needs, personality, comfort level, and therapy goals.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, helps teens recognize connections between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It can provide practical tools for responding to stress, worry, self-criticism, and difficult situations in healthier ways.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, or DBT, teaches skills for managing intense emotions, coping with distress, communicating effectively, and building healthier relationships.

Solution-Focused Therapy is a practical, goal-oriented approach that helps teens recognize their existing strengths, identify what is already working, and take achievable steps toward the changes they want to make.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART, may help teens process distressing memories and experiences without requiring them to describe every detail. It may be used to support teens experiencing trauma-related distress, anxiety, or other emotional challenges.

Mindfulness can help teens become more aware of their thoughts and emotions without immediately reacting to them. These strategies may support emotional regulation, focus, self-awareness, and stress management.

Parents and caregivers may also benefit from guidance on communication, boundaries, emotional support, and staying connected with their teen. Optional parent sessions may be recommended when they support the teen’s overall counselling goals.

No matter what your teen is facing, counselling is personalized to help them feel more grounded, capable, and supported.

How Our Teen Therapy Works

1

Begin the Conversation

Our first priority is to understand your teen, your concerns, and what your family hopes to gain from counselling. The process may begin with a parent or caregiver consultation, a joint conversation, or an initial session with your teen, depending on their age, needs, and therapist.

2

Create a Personalized Plan

Your teen and their therapist will identify goals and create a counselling plan that reflects your teen’s needs, strengths, personality, and comfort level. Parents or caregivers may be included where appropriate and beneficial.

3

Build Skills and Create Change

Through ongoing sessions, your teen will explore their experiences, practise new skills, and work toward their goals. Their therapist will recognize progress, adjust the approach when needed, and support your teen through each stage of the process.

Your teen does not need to have everything figured out before asking for support.
