Direct Billing for Counselling Made Simple
At True Living Counselling & Coaching Inc., we understand that navigating insurance benefits can be stressful. That’s why we offer direct billing whenever possible, helping you access counselling services with less financial worry.
Our goal is to make getting support as simple and stress-free as possible so you can focus on your mental health.
What is Direct Billing?
Direct billing means we submit your counselling claim directly to your insurance provider on your behalf. If your plan allows direct billing, you may only be responsible for any portion not covered by your benefits, such as a deductible, co-pay, or amount exceeding your annual coverage.
Coverage varies depending on your individual insurance plan.
Which Therapists can Direct Bill?
Every extended health benefits plan is different, and coverage depends on your individual policy. Many insurance plans provide coverage for counselling services delivered by specific regulated mental health professionals.
Depending on your benefits plan, you may have coverage for services provided by:
- Registered Psychologists
- Provisional Psychologists
- Registered Social Workers (RSWs)
- Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCCs)
At True Living Counselling & Coaching Inc., our team includes professionals with a variety of credentials. We can help match you with a therapist whose professional designation aligns with your insurance coverage whenever possible.
If you’re unsure which designation your insurance plan covers, we recommend contacting your insurance provider before your appointment or reaching out to our Client Care Team for assistance.
Does My Insurance Cover Counselling Services?
Most extended health benefit plans include coverage for counselling services, but every insurance plan is different.
Your coverage depends on several factors, including:
- Your insurance provider
- Your employer’s benefit plan
- The type of counselling service you’re receiving
- The professional designation of your therapist
- Your remaining annual mental health benefits
Because every insurance policy is unique, we recommend reviewing your benefits or contacting your insurance provider before your first appointment.
If you’re unsure, our administrative team is happy to help you understand which therapist at True Living Counselling & Coaching Inc. may best meet your insurance requirements.
Questions to Ask Your Insurance Provider
Before your appointment, consider asking:
- Do my benefits cover counselling?
- Which professional designations are covered under my plan? (Registered Psychologist, Provisional Psychologist, Registered Master’s Level Social Worker, Certified Canadian Counsellor)
- How much coverage do I have remaining this year?
- Can my therapist submit claims through direct billing?
- Is there a deductible or co-payment?
- Are couples or family counselling sessions covered?
- Are child and teen counselling services covered under my plan?
Having these answers before your first appointment can help prevent unexpected costs and ensure you receive the maximum benefit available through your insurance plan.
What if My Plan Does Not Cover Services?
Check with your insurance provider for details on what your specific plan covers

- Many extended health care insurance plans cover full or partial psychological services.
- We provide electronic receipts, so you can seek additional coverage or reimbursement, and you may also be able to claim these expenses as a medical deduction on your taxes.

Can You Guarantee Direct Billing?
Unfortunately No.
Your insurance has the final say regarding your insurance. Sometimes they will ask us to inform you to self submit even though they allow us to direct bill.
What If I Have 2 Insurances?
Sometimes we are able to direct bill to both insurances. We will need to know which is the primary insurance and which is the 2nd insurance. If your insurance does not allow for direct billing to your primary insurance then you will need to self submit your receipt in order to be reimbursed.
Do You Direct Bill for Other Provinces?
At this time we only direct bill for insurances in Alberta. We are able to bill to Victim Services in other provinces but we will need to set this up. Just let us know and we can work with you to set it up with Victim Services. We will provide you with a detailed receipt for you to submit to your own insurance.
What Are Your Fees for Direct Billing?
We cover all the fees associated to direct billing!
No cost to you at all.
Can You Direct Bill for My Children?
Yes we can!
If both parents have insurance then we will need to know which insurance is the primary for your child. We are required to bill to the primary insurance and then we may even be able to bill to your second insurance.
How do I choose the right therapist for me?
Choosing the right therapist is a highly personal decision. At True Living Counselling & Coaching, we believe the most important factor is finding someone you feel comfortable with—a therapist you trust and who understands your needs.
To help you choose, consider the following:
- What do you need support with? Whether it’s anxiety, relationships, trauma, or something else, we have specialists who can support your unique needs.
- Explore our therapists’ bios: You can view each therapist’s areas of expertise on our website.
- Book a free 15-minute consultation: Take advantage of this opportunity to ask questions, get to know the therapist, and see if you feel comfortable with their approach.
- Fill out our match me with a therapist form
- Trust your instincts: Success in therapy often comes down to a strong, trusting relationship. You can schedule consultations with as many therapists as you like to ensure a good fit.
We’re here to guide you through the process and help you make an informed choice.
